Netflix is greenlighting a new talent show with Liam Payne called “Building the Band”

Netflix to Proceed with Talent Discovery Show ‘Building the Band’ Despite Judge Liam Payne’s Death

Netflix has confirmed that it will continue with the talent discovery show “Building the Band” despite the tragic death of series judge Liam Payne, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

“Building the Band” is a talent competition series produced by Remarkable Entertainment, a part of Banijay UK, with the goal of forming the next great music group without the contestants ever seeing each other. The show was filmed in the UK in summer 2024, prior to Payne’s untimely passing from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires in October 2024.

Before his death at 31, Payne was a judge on “Building the Band” alongside Nicole Scherzinger from The Pussycat Dolls and Kelly Rowland from Destiny’s Child. The unique format of the series had musicians competing for a spot in a band, practicing together without meeting until their live performances.

While Netflix has not publicly revealed how they will address Payne’s absence in the series, sources state that the streaming service has continued conversations with Payne’s family. Brandon Riegg, Netflix’s vp of nonfiction series and sports, mentioned during a recent event in Los Angeles that more information would be shared in the future.

Possible adjustments that may be made by the producers of “Building the Band” could include a tribute to Payne in the opening episode by his fellow judges and host AJ McLean from the Backstreet Boys. Media inquiries regarding the show have been directed to Netflix by Banijay UK executives.

Despite the tragic loss of Payne, Netflix is moving forward with “Building the Band,” showing sensitivity to the situation by allowing time for Payne’s family to process their grief. Stay tuned for updates on how the show will address the absence of the beloved judge.
