Bren Wells: A Beacon of Belonging at Auburn University
Growing up in a small, rural town as one of the few people of color, Bren Wells developed a sensitivity towards those who feel like outsiders. Her journey led her to Auburn University, where she found her passion for fostering inclusivity by leading the International Student Organization (ISO).
Raised in Red Bay, Alabama, Wells was adopted from China at a young age. Despite being enveloped in a predominantly white community, she held a deep love for science, helping others, and exploring diverse cultures. Setting foot on Auburn’s campus as a first-generation college student, Wells faced challenges adjusting to the academic rigor and social dynamics.
Feeling isolated and overwhelmed, Wells observed the division between international and American student groups on campus. Uncertain of where she belonged, she hesitated to engage with the ISO due to not being an “international” student. However, an invitation to a social hour hosted by the Vietnamese Student Association marked a turning point in her college experience.
Entering the event filled with vibrant colors and diverse faces, Wells was moved by the sense of community and connection she witnessed. This moment inspired her to dive deep into ISO, eventually ascending to the role of president, a first for an American student in the organization’s leadership.
Wells’ cross-cultural perspective and genuine curiosity about people have driven her to bridge the gap between international and American students. She has worked tirelessly to enhance the orientation experience for international students, aiming to integrate them fully into the Auburn Family.
One of Wells’ proudest achievements was organizing the Peace Dinner, a multicultural event that brought together over 1,000 students, faculty, and families. Witnessing the joy and camaraderie during the event solidified her belief in the power of fostering belonging and unity among diverse groups.
As her tenure as president nears its end, Wells is focused on advocating for more comprehensive orientation programs and increased support for international students. Her unique background and unwavering commitment to inclusivity have made her a transformative leader on campus.
With a vision of creating a more connected and welcoming campus community, Wells continues to champion diversity and belonging at Auburn University. Her story serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for all students striving to find their place and make a difference in the world.
