The 36th GLAAD Media Awards recently announced 303 nominees across 33 categories, highlighting stories that shift culture. Among the nominees are those centered around transgender individuals, those living with HIV, LGBTQ criminalization globally, LGBTQ asylum seekers, LGBTQ youth, and more.

Entertainment nominees include popular shows like “Abbott Elementary,” “Agatha All Along,” and “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” as well as music artists like Billie Eilish and Elton John. Journalism is also recognized, with local news outlets and major networks being nominated for their coverage of LGBTQ issues.

Special Recognition honors were awarded to projects like “DRAG: The Musical,” “Red Ink: A Tribute to Cecilia Gentili,” and The Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center.

The 36th GLAAD Media Awards will take place in Los Angeles on March 27, 2025, and are presented by sponsors Delta, Hornitos, and Sony Music Group.

GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis highlighted the importance of LGBTQ representation in media and the power of storytelling in the face of anti-LGBTQ sentiment. The awards aim to celebrate and promote acceptance and understanding of LGBTQ individuals through accurate and inclusive media representation.

The awards show, which has grown in prominence since its inception in 1990, aims to send a message of acceptance to audiences worldwide. The nominees for this year’s awards reflect work released between January 1 and December 31, 2024, and cover a wide range of media formats.

GLAAD also celebrates the recognition of Outstanding Independent Journalism this year, expanding its categories to better reflect the evolving media landscape. This category will honor creators and independent news organizations who contribute to journalism about LGBTQ issues.
