Chinese Scientists Simulate Operation Targeting Elon Musk’s Starlink Satellites

Amid growing concerns over China’s space militarization, Chinese scientists conducted a simulation operation targeting Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite network. The operation revealed vulnerabilities in the massive network and its military application value, particularly in tracking and reconnaissance operations.

A team led by Wu Yunhua from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics published a peer-reviewed paper in the Chinese academic journal Systems Engineering and Electronics detailing the simulation. The findings showed that 99 Chinese satellites could approach and track 1,400 Starlink satellites in just 12 hours using lasers and other tools.

Following Russia’s conflict with Ukraine, the militarization of space has intensified, posing a significant threat to China’s space security. This prompted Chinese researchers to conduct the simulation to assess the impact of Starlink on China’s territory and surrounding space domain.
