BET Media Group to Be Honored at NAACP Image Awards, Deon Cole Announced as Host

The NAACP Image Awards organizers have made exciting announcements regarding this year’s ceremony, revealing both the host and recipient of the prestigious Founders Award. BET Media Group has been selected as the honoree of the Founders Award, in recognition of its remarkable 45-year legacy of amplifying Black culture and advocating for authentic storytelling. The Founders Award celebrates individuals and organizations that have fearlessly pursued groundbreaking initiatives, demonstrating that the seemingly unattainable is indeed achievable.

Founded in 1980 by Bob and Sheila Johnson, BET made history as the first cable network dedicated to Black audiences. Over the years, it has evolved into a multimedia powerhouse, encompassing television, streaming, digital platforms, live events, and international markets. In addition to its entertainment ventures, BET has also been actively involved in advocacy efforts, spearheading relief initiatives for Haiti, Hurricane Katrina, COVID-19, and most recently, providing support to the historically Black community in Altadena following the California wildfires through the Altadena Community Preservation Fund in partnership with NAACP, WME, and JSSK.

Derrick Johnson, the NAACP president and CEO, commended BET for its trailblazing contributions to the entertainment industry, emphasizing its role in reshaping the media landscape and championing diverse storytelling. The Founders Award is a testament to BET’s enduring commitment to innovation, cultural representation, and setting new standards for excellence.

Past recipients of the Founders Award include luminaries such as Toni Vaz, the founder of the NAACP Image Awards, and acclaimed musician Garth Brooks. The 56th edition of the NAACP Image Awards will be hosted by the talented comedian-actor-writer Deon Cole, known for his roles in various TV shows and stand-up specials. His engaging presence and comedic flair are expected to elevate the ceremony, captivating audiences with his unique perspective and vibrant comedic style.

BET’s Executive VP, Connie Orlando, expressed excitement about collaborating with Deon Cole once again, recognizing his ability to resonate deeply with viewers through his authentic performances and humor. Deon’s wide-ranging contributions to entertainment, from acting to stand-up comedy, have earned him a dedicated fan base and critical acclaim.

As the countdown to the Image Awards broadcast intensifies, anticipation is building for a night filled with memorable moments and well-deserved accolades. The NAACP has been diligently recognizing winners across various categories in non-televised ceremonies, leading up to the main event. In addition, efforts to support communities impacted by recent wildfires, such as Altadena, Pacific Palisades, and Pasadena, are underway through collaborative initiatives involving BET, NAACP, JSSK, and WME.

The establishment of the Altadena Community Preservation Fund underscores the commitment to safeguarding homeowners from displacement and preserving the cultural heritage of affected communities. By joining forces with local organizations and authorities, BET and the NAACP are demonstrating their unwavering dedication to supporting communities in need and fostering resilience in the face of adversity.

As the 56th NAACP Image Awards draw near, the stage is set for a celebration of visionaries, trailblazers, and cultural icons who continue to redefine and revolutionize the entertainment landscape. Through a blend of talent, creativity, and unwavering commitment to diversity and inclusion, the Image Awards promise to showcase the best of Black excellence in media and entertainment.
