Banijay U.K. Captures Development Deal with Ellie Wood’s Clearwood Films
Banijay U.K. has inked a significant development deal with Ellie Wood, the mastermind behind Netflix’s “The Dig” and ITV’s “Stonehouse,” and her production company Clearwood Films. This collaboration marks a continuation of the successful partnership between Banijay Rights and Clearwood Films since 2019. The deal reaffirms Banijay Rights’ commitment to distributing Clearwood’s projects to audiences worldwide.
The initial project under this new agreement involves the acquisition of the rights to Barbara Pym’s acclaimed novel “Excellent Women,” with the potential to explore additional works by the renowned author. Clearwood Films will have access to financial resources for idea development, treatments, as well as comprehensive support from Banijay U.K.’s central resources, including finance, legal, and business affairs. Upon approval, Clearwood Films can opt to co-produce with Banijay U.K. companies.
Patrick Holland, CEO of Banijay U.K., praised Ellie Wood’s exceptional talent, stating, “Ellie is a brilliant producer with a proven track record of delivering outstanding, high-quality drama. Banijay Rights have enjoyed a fruitful collaboration with Clearwood, working closely on projects like Stonehouse. We are thrilled to support her creative vision.”
In response, Ellie Wood expressed her excitement about the ongoing partnership with Banijay U.K., saying, “I’m thrilled to be collaborating with Patrick and continuing Clearwood Films’ relationship with the broader Banijay family. I am particularly excited about adapting the works of Barbara Pym, one of my favorite authors. I look forward to creating a ‘Pymverse,’ bringing her iconic British tales to both dedicated fans and a broader TV audience.”
Clearwood Films has an array of upcoming projects in the pipeline, including a mystery single scripted project for a linear broadcaster. Additionally, Wood serves as the executive producer on Film4’s adaptation of Deborah Levy’s novel “Hot Milk,” featuring a star-studded cast including Emma Mackey, Fiona Shaw, and Vicky Krieps, which recently premiered at the prestigious Berlinale. Another project, “49 Days,” a political drama by acclaimed writer John Preston based on the eventful, short-lived premiership of Liz Truss, is also in development with backing from Banijay.
The collaboration between Banijay U.K. and Clearwood Films signifies a dynamic partnership poised to deliver compelling and captivating content to audiences worldwide. As Ellie Wood’s vision continues to unfold, viewers can anticipate a diverse range of thought-provoking and engaging projects that showcase the best of British storytelling.
