Freshmen college enrollment increased in fall 2024, according to the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, correcting its previous report of a decline.
An error in the preliminary enrollment report released in October led to a miscount, as certain students were labeled as dual-enrolled instead of freshmen.
After rectifying the error, the revised data shows a 3% rise in overall undergraduate enrollment compared to the previous year.
Final freshmen enrollment numbers will be released on Jan. 23.
Experts had raised concerns about potential decreases in college enrollment due to issues with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, but changes to the FAFSA have actually increased access to Pell Grants for more students.
‘Challenges Remain’
According to higher education expert Mark Kantrowitz, improvements have been made with the new FAFSA, but there is still room for enhancement.
The U.S. Department of Education released the FAFSA for 2025-26 ahead of schedule to enhance college access.
Total college application volume for the current season has increased compared to the previous year.
