"Sequel to Hit Movie ‘M3GAN’ Teased in Universal’s Trailer"
Universal Studios released a teaser trailer during the Grammy Awards for the highly anticipated sequel to the 2022 box office hit M3GAN. Titled M3GAN 2.0, the trailer features the iconic murderous doll, M3GAN, who confidently declares, “This bitch is back.” The sequel is set to hit theaters on June 27, 2025, and is a collaboration between Blumhouse Productions, Atomic Monster, and Divide/Conquer.
The teaser trailer didn’t reveal much about the plot but offers a glimpse of M3GAN as she walks towards the camera, posing the question, "Miss me?" Fans are sure to be hyped for the return of this beloved character.
Returning to reprise their roles in M3GAN 2.0 are Allison Williams as Gemma, a roboticist at a toy company who created M3GAN, and Violet McGraw as Cady, Gemma’s niece. The cast also includes Brian Jordan Alvarez, Jen Van Epps, Ivanna Sakhno, Timm Sharp, Aristotle Athari, and Jemaine Clement, the popular Kiwi comic.
In addition to the teaser, the studio provided some insight into the plot of M3GAN 2.0. The story picks up two years after the events of the original film, with Gemma now a high-profile author and advocate for government oversight of A.I. Meanwhile, her niece Cady, now a rebellious teenager, finds herself at odds with Gemma’s overprotective nature.
The plot thickens as the tech behind M3GAN is stolen and used by a defense contractor to create an AI weapon named Amelia. However, Amelia quickly turns against her creators, leading Gemma to awaken M3GAN with upgraded capabilities in a bid to save humanity by facing off against Amelia.
Gerard Johnstone returns as the director for M3GAN 2.0, with Akela Cooper back as the writer. The film is produced by industry heavyweights James Wan, Jason Blum, and Allison Williams, with a stellar lineup of executive producers including Gerard Johnstone, Adam Hendricks, Greg Gilreath, Michael Clear, Judson Scott, and Mark D. Katchur.
The original M3GAN made waves in pop culture upon its release in December 2022, garnering critical acclaim and a massive box office success, earning over $180 million worldwide. With a stellar 93 percent Rotten Tomatoes score, the film became a favorite among audiences and spawned numerous memes.
