Pharrell Williams and Michel Gondry’s Universal Music Collaboration Won’t Be Released in English

Pharrell Williams and Michel Gondry Cancel Movie Musical “Golden”

Pharrell Williams and Michel Gondry have made the difficult decision to cancel their movie musical, “Golden,” which was in the postproduction process for Universal Pictures. The creative duo has decided not to shop the project to other interested parties and will instead continue working on the project.

The star-studded cast of “Golden” included Kelvin Harrison Jr., Halle Bailey, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Brian Tyree Henry, Janelle Monáe, and Missy Elliott. The project was set in Virginia Beach during the summer of 1977 and drew inspiration from Atlantis Apartments, the neighborhood where Williams spent his formative years. Gondry directed the musical from a script by Martin Hynes and Steven Levenson.

In a statement shared with The Hollywood Reporter, Williams and Gondry explained, “When all of us got into the editing room, we collectively decided there wasn’t a path forward to tell the version of this story that we originally envisioned. We appreciate all the hard work of the talented cast and crew. While we’re disappointed that we can’t deliver this film, we have incredible partners at Universal and look forward to collaborating in a different capacity in the future.”

Variety was the first to report the news of the movie not moving forward. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
