French Actress Juliette Binoche to Lead Cannes Film Festival Jury in 2025
French cinema icon Juliette Binoche has been announced as the president of the international jury for the prestigious Cannes Film Festival set to take place in 2025. Binoche, known for her remarkable performances in a wide range of films, will take over the role from acclaimed director Greta Gerwig and will be guiding a group of distinguished film professionals in selecting the recipient of the coveted Palme d’Or award.
Binoche’s association with the Cannes Film Festival dates back to 1985 when she made her debut at the renowned event with the premiere of André Téchiné’s “Rendez-vous,” a performance that catapulted her to stardom. Reflecting on her long-standing relationship with the festival, Binoche once remarked, “I was born at the Festival de Cannes,” underscoring the significance of the event in her career.
Over the years, Binoche has graced the Cannes red carpet with a myriad of cinematic gems from acclaimed filmmakers such as Michael Haneke, David Cronenberg, Krzysztof Kieślowski, Olivier Assayas, Claire Denis, and Anh Hung Tran. Her outstanding portrayal in Abbas Kiarostami’s “Certified Copy” earned her the prestigious Cannes best actress award in 2010, cementing her status as one of the most respected talents in the industry.
Expressing her gratitude for the opportunity to preside over the Cannes jury, Binoche remarked, “In 1985, I walked up the steps for the first time with the enthusiasm and uncertainty of a young actress; I never imagined I’d return 40 years later in the honorary role of President of the Jury. I appreciate the privilege, the responsibility, and the absolute need for humility.”
In addition to her Cannes accolades, Binoche holds the distinction of being the only actress to have won the best actress award at all three major European film festivals – Cannes, Venice, and Berlin. Her diverse range of roles, including her portrayal of Coco Chanel in Todd A. Kessler’s “The New Look” and her collaboration with Ralph Fiennes in Uberto Pasolini’s adaptation of Homer’s “The Odyssey,” showcase her versatility and talent.
As she gears up to lead the jury at the 78th Cannes International Film Festival from May 13 to 24, 2025, Binoche continues to captivate audiences with her compelling performances and unwavering dedication to the art of cinema. Her appointment as the festival jury president is a testament to her enduring impact on the world of film and her commitment to celebrating cinematic excellence.
