White Lotus creator Mike White teases a darker season three set in Thailand
Get ready for a darker White Lotus, according to creator Mike White. The Emmy-winning hit series is set to return with its third season on Feb. 16, with a new location in Thailand for the White Lotus hotel chain.
In an interview with Time, White reveals that this season will be “much, much darker” than the previous ones in Hawaii and Italy. The upcoming season is described as grander and more epic, with White considering the previous seasons as a rehearsal for what’s to come.
The cast for season three includes Carrie Coon, Walton Goggins, Parker Posey, Michelle Monaghan, Leslie Bibb, Jason Isaacs, Patrick Schwarzenegger, and more, with K-pop star Lalisa Manobal making an appearance. Goggins teases his character’s bitterness and anger upon arriving at the White Lotus in Thailand, hinting at a season filled with existential themes and heavy personal struggles.
White, known for exploring topical themes in his series, now focuses on death and Eastern spirituality in the upcoming season. He shares that his personal experiences influenced the new season’s direction, expressing his interest in exploring Eastern wellness practices and skepticism towards Western self-care.
Filmed at the Four Seasons Koh Samui, the season faced challenges like record-breaking heat that led to crew falling ill. Despite the difficulties, the cast bonded over the unique filming schedule that included breakfast scenes, lunches, bedroom drama, and time at sea.
Reflecting on his decision to set the season in Thailand, White recalls a fever dream that inspired the plot after being hospitalized with severe bronchitis. This location holds personal memories for White, who also competed in reality TV shows in Thailand, turning his negative experiences into inspiration for The White Lotus.
The upcoming season promises a surreal and paradisiacal vibe, with White hinting at a Hotel California-esque theme of once you check in, you can never leave. With the show already renewed for a fourth season, White hints at potential future seasons and a long-term vision for the series.
