Josh Brolin Reflects on Getting Humbled by Steven Spielberg During ‘The Goonies’
Josh Brolin reminisced about his early days as an actor on a recent episode of SiriusXM’s ‘Literally! With Rob Lowe,’ where he discussed his role as Brand Walsh in the classic 1985 film ‘The Goonies’ directed by Richard Donner.
Brolin shared that he initially had to prove himself as a serious actor, diving into studying various acting techniques such as Stanislavski, Grotowski, and Antonin Artaud’s Theatre of Cruelty. Despite his dedication to learning, Brolin had some ambitious ideas that he wanted to share with Spielberg during filming.
Recounting a conversation with Spielberg in one of the tunnels on set, Brolin excitedly proposed a deep emotional interpretation of his character’s actions. However, Spielberg quickly brought him back to earth by reminding him to simply focus on delivering the lines as written.
Despite the humbling experience, Brolin’s casting in ‘The Goonies’ was a result of his perfect fit for the role of Brand Walsh, alongside Sean Astin and other young talents in the film. The movie follows a group of misfit kids on a thrilling adventure to find hidden treasure.
Overall, Brolin’s journey on ‘The Goonies’ taught him valuable lessons about the craft of acting and the importance of staying grounded in his performances.
