A Friend of Liza Minnelli Reveals Her Life’s Biggest Regret: Not Having Children

Allan Lazare, a close friend of the late Liza Minnelli, revealed in a 2024 documentary that Minnelli’s greatest disappointment in life was not being a mother. Despite being married and divorced four times, Minnelli experienced three pregnancy losses. Lazare spoke fondly of Minnelli’s potential as a mother, praising her nurturing qualities and love for children.

In the documentary, Lazare also shared anecdotes about Minnelli’s interactions with his own daughter, Lauren. He recounted a touching moment when Minnelli taught Lauren how to sing her signature song, “Liza with a Z.” The documentary, released last year, delves into Minnelli’s life in the 1970s, following the death of her mother, Judy Garland, with insights from famous friends like Mia Farrow and Michael Feinstein.

Feinstein and Farrow both highlighted Minnelli’s role as a godmother to Farrow’s twins, emphasizing her dedication to her godchildren despite not having children of her own. Minnelli, in an interview with Interview magazine in October 2024, reflected on her challenging childhood, describing her parents’ divorce and the strained relationship between them.

Despite her upbringing, Minnelli expressed gratitude for the fascinating experiences she had growing up, particularly her father Vincente Minnelli’s glamorous presence. She acknowledged the difficulties of her childhood but maintained a positive outlook on her relationships with her parents.
