Renowned Physicist Brian Cox Takes Scottish Stage with Play Exploring 2008 Financial Crash

The Edinburgh International Festival will kick off this year with the world premiere of a new satirical play about the financial crash of 2008, starring Brian Cox. Written by James Graham and directed by Andrew Panton, “Make It Happen” will see Cox returning to the Scottish stage after a decade.

Set in Edinburgh, the play follows Cox’s portrayal of Adam Smith, the Scottish philosopher and economist, as he delves into the unchecked growth, spiraling greed, and nail-biting hubris that led to the global economic crisis. Graham’s writing promises a story filled with music, larger-than-life characters, humor, and ghosts from Scotland’s past.

Cox expressed his excitement about working with Graham and returning to Scotland, while Graham shared his honor and thrill to be part of such a prestigious festival. The play aims to explore the lasting impact of the 2008 financial crash and its divisive legacies while offering audiences a mix of music, storytelling, and humor.

Nicola Benedetti, Director of the Edinburgh International Festival, praised “Make It Happen” for exemplifying the festival’s theme of ‘The Truth We Seek’ and its thought-provoking nature. The play is set to run from August 1-9 at the Festival Theatre, promising a unique and engaging experience for audiences.
