Interim UC Davis Fire Chief Nathaniel Hartinger deployed to UCLA

Interim UC Davis Fire Chief Nathaniel Hartinger deployed to UCLA on Jan. 12 to coordinate emergency response efforts due to the nearby Palisades Fire evacuation warning. UCLA has moved classes remote through this week as a precaution.

Five UC Davis Fire personnel are on the front lines of the Eaton Fire, including Capt. Nate Potter, Engineer Erich Schultz, and Firefighters Chad Cunningham and Gerrit Dykzeul aboard Brush Truck 34. Additionally, Capt. Steve Dunn is leading a group of personnel from the Lake Tahoe area.

Cal Fire reported that the Palisades Fire has reached nearly 24,000 acres and is 17% contained, while the Eaton Fire covers 14,000 acres with 35% containment. Interim Fire Chief Hartinger mentioned that the conditions in the area are improving.

Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Mary Croughan expressed support and shared resources with faculty members affected by the fires.

Impact of Wildfire Smoke

UC Davis and UC Davis Health experts discuss the effects of smoke from the fires burning structures and houses. Distinguished Professor Anthony Wexler highlighted the increased toxicity of smoke from burning materials like plastic, solvents, and metals in houses.

California Veterinary Emergency Team ready to provide assistance

The California Veterinary Emergency Team (CVET) is on alert status and prepared to assist with veterinary needs in Southern California. CVET has actively worked in all 58 counties to assess veterinary needs and support planning efforts.

CVET Executive Director Michael Ziccardi mentioned that they are in regular communication with local organizations to provide veterinary assistance as required.

UC Davis staff contribute to relief efforts

Pet Supplies Drive

Rachel Herstik, a large animal technician at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, is collecting pet supplies to distribute to areas affected by the fires. She is requesting donations for large and small animals.

Protecting Bees

Patrick Hardy, a master beekeeper, is coordinating with beekeepers in Los Angeles County to protect apiaries from the wildfires. He aims to provide assistance and resources to beekeepers affected by the fires.

UC Davis community aids in relief efforts

Members of the UC Davis community are actively supporting those impacted by the wildfires in Los Angeles County. UC Davis Fire Department personnel are assisting in fighting the Eaton Fire, which continues to grow in size.

Chancellor Gary S. May expressed solidarity with those affected and highlighted opportunities for support.

Donations to the Student Fire Relief Fund and Staff Emergency Fund are open to help students and staff affected by the fires. In-person support is available at various events on campus.
