J.J. Abrams, known for his work on iconic franchises like “Star Trek” and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” has returned with a project he co-wrote after six years. Teaming up with writer and executive producer LaToya Morgan, Abrams brings us a Max drama series titled “Duster,” which reunites him with his “Lost” star, Josh Holloway.
Set in 1972, the series follows the first Black female FBI agent, played by Rachel Hilson, as she recruits a daring getaway driver, portrayed by Holloway, to dismantle a growing crime syndicate led by Keith David. As expected from Abrams’ projects, the storyline is filled with unexpected twists and turns.
“Duster” is a retro crime thriller with a nostalgic ’70s aesthetic, showcasing Hilson as a bold FBI agent and Holloway in his charismatic self. Aside from Holloway and Hilson, the series also stars Sydney Elisabeth, Camille Guaty, Asivak Koostachin, Adriana Aluna Martinez, Benjamin Charles Watson, and Greg Grunberg, who is a constant in Abrams’ projects.
In a candid conversation, Abrams and Morgan shed light on the creation of “Duster.” Abrams revealed that the initial idea stemmed from a scene he envisioned two decades ago, featuring a car racing towards a payphone in the desert. This image sparked a creative collaboration between Abrams and Morgan, resulting in the development of the series.
The choice of setting the series in the 1970s was driven by the allure of nostalgia, obsolete technology like payphones, and the excitement of blending action and humor in a bygone era. According to Morgan, the aim was to craft a show that encapsulated the essence of a different time while delivering a compelling mystery at its core.
Both Abrams and Morgan praised the collaboration, with Abrams highlighting Morgan’s distinct perspective and creative contributions. The casting of Hilson in a challenging role opposite Holloway was a unanimous decision, as she brought a perfect balance of toughness and vulnerability to her character.
As the series delves into the criminal underworld of the 1970s, Abrams highlighted the element of unpredictability and suspense that distinguishes “Duster” from conventional narratives. The show’s narrative style, reminiscent of serialized comics, offers viewers a thrilling and engaging experience reminiscent of classic cliffhangers.
With “Duster,” Abrams and Morgan aim to deliver a captivating blend of action, mystery, and retro charm, inviting audiences to immerse themselves in a world filled with intrigue and excitement. The series promises a fresh take on the crime genre, infused with the signature storytelling flair that defines Abrams’ work.
