20th Century Greenlights Sequel to Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion

Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion sequel in the works with Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow

The highly anticipated sequel to the cult classic film Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion is officially in development at 20th Century Studios. Reports confirm that Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow are currently in negotiations to reprise their beloved roles in the new movie. Additionally, both actresses will also be serving as executive producers for the project.

The film is set to be directed by Tim Federle, known for his work on Disney+ original movie Better Nate Than Never and the popular series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. While the movie is aiming to begin filming in June, the exact location is yet to be finalized, with Los Angeles being one of the potential options.

Returning to write the sequel is Robin Schiff, the original writer of Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, as well as showrunner of the hit series Emily in Paris. Laurence Mark, the veteran producer of the first film, will also be involved in the same capacity. Barry Kemp, creator of the 1980s series Newhart, is set to produce the sequel as well.

Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, originally released in 1997 under Disney’s Touchstone Pictures banner, became a cult favorite amongst fans. The film follows the hilarious journey of two friends who fabricate successful careers to impress their former classmates at their high school reunion.

Mira Sorvino, who won an Oscar for her role in Mighty Aphrodite, has recently been seen in various projects like Starz’s Shining Vale and Ryan Murphy’s Impeachment: American Crime Story and Hollywood. Lisa Kudrow, known for her role in Friends, has also been actively working in projects like the Time Bandits TV series and Netflix’s No Good Deed.

With a talented team behind the scenes and the original stars on board, the Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion sequel is sure to delight fans old and new.
