Nolan Arenado Could Thrive in Boston, Says Former Teammate Trevor Story
As the Cardinals look to trade third baseman Nolan Arenado and the post-holiday market stalls, Red Sox infielder Trevor Story believes a reunion with Arenado in Boston would be a good fit. In an interview with NESN.com, Story expressed his belief that Arenado’s intensity, passion for the game, and superstar status would allow him to thrive in Boston.
Story told reporter Greg Dudek, “He would thrive in Boston just given his intensity, his love for the game, his passion for the game. He’s a superstar, man. I don’t think we’re turning down anybody that wants to play in Boston and wants to do it.”
However, the potential trade for Arenado is complicated by various factors. Other teams, such as the Red Sox and Tigers, are also interested in All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman, which could impact negotiations. Additionally, finding a deal that satisfies both the Cardinals’ desire to reduce payroll and Arenado’s championship aspirations, as well as his full-trade clause, presents a challenge.
Despite the uncertainties, conversations between the Cardinals and Red Sox about Arenado have been ongoing. Reuniting with Story adds to Boston’s appeal, and other media outlets have also linked the Red Sox to Arenado.
Arenado’s contract, with $74 million remaining, also complicates trade discussions, especially considering the reworks made to facilitate his move to the Cardinals. The Cardinals are open to trading Arenado, but if a suitable deal cannot be reached, they have received interest in other players like Erick Fedde and Steven Matz as alternative ways to reduce payroll.
John Mozeliak, president of baseball operations for the Cardinals, has indicated that they are open to finding a place that satisfies Arenado’s desires. However, if a trade is not possible, Arenado may remain with the Cardinals for the upcoming season. Throughout the trade discussions, Arenado has remained open-minded, and his future destination remains uncertain as spring training approaches.
Overall, the potential trade involving Arenado remains complex, with multiple factors at play. While Boston is seen as a favorable destination for him, the final outcome is still uncertain as negotiations continue.
